KYW Newsradio and St. Mery Medical Center
According to the National Institutes of Health, 1 in 4 women in the United States dies from heart disease. That makes it the leading cause of death among women, and more women than men die of the disease each year.
Yet recent studies have shown women’s cardiac symptoms all too often are still not accorded the same urgency in the medical community as men’s complaints.
The research suggests gender bias may be part of the reason, but some studies have shown that women experience a wider range of heart attack symptoms than men do, making it more likely that a different medical issue may first be considered.

So how does a woman know when to speed-dial her doctor? Cardiologist Dr. Dawn Calderon, of St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pa., decodes the complex signals of cardiovascular disease, and is one of fewer than 150 physicians nationwide formally trained in a unique area of specialty in treating adults identified with congenital heart defects as children.
Dr. Calderon talks with KYW’s Rasa Kaye about ticker trouble in women, and how to pick up on the often subtle signs of coronary disease.
